Type : Camel Safari Duration: 5 nights 6 days
Locations Visited: Laikipia, Samburu
Description:Walking Wild in Laikipia Maasai-land is a walking safari experience through some of Kenya’s best wildlife-viewing habitats - the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy and two Maasai Community Conservation areas, Il Ngwesi and Lekurruki. These 3 areas provide some of the most stunning landscapes in Africa and are home to a wide variety of game including the “Big Five” (Rhino, Elephant, Lion, Leopard, Buffalo), over 420 species of birds, Reticulated Giraffe, Cheetah, numerous different antelopes, and endangered species such as the Grevy’s Zebra and Sitatunga.Professional guides lead the 5-day walking safaris starting on the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, recognised as one of Africa’s top safari destinations. The walking route runs across Lewa through Il Ngwesi and ends at Lekurruki, with all 5 nights spent camping out under the stars (the 3 night safari is from Lewa to Il Ngwesi).
Guests will traverse a variety of ecosystems, enabling them to experience the diversity of flora and fauna that the areas have to offer. The focus of the safari is learning about the ecosystems as well as the local Maasai culture. Guests will be taught tracking techniques and other vital bush skills, as well as how to identify and understand the behaviour of the insects, plants, and animals they come across. Local Maasai morani (warriors) will join the guests to give insight into traditional Maasai customs.

Each safari is different. Each one is tailored to your interest, the time you have available and the season. Moonlight is a bonus. The distance you cover each day is flexible, depending on you and suitable campsites, but it is usually between 8-20kms. You don’t have to be superfit, just a little resilient. It takes time to tune into nomadic life - but once it grabs…… these will be days you won’t forget.
2
Using camels to carry camping gear and supplies enables us to travel in style in this rugged and relatively unexplored country. These are walking safaris but one or two riding camels are always available, terrain permitting. Porters are called in when one of the striking peaks is our destination and it is too steep and cold for the ’ships of the desert’. The climate is hot and dry. Rains are expected in April/May and again in November. This in no way prevents us from going on safari: seeing a dry lugga change to a roaring torrent in 2 minutes is something else!
3
Your hosts are Helen Douglas Dufresne and her loyal Samburu crew who are committed to ensuring that you enjoy your safari in every possible comfort and safety. They make a good team, are all experts in the bush and will proudly show you everything of interest. Helen, after many years in the district, is well known and respected by the local people and well versed in folklore, botany, ornithology and astrology.
