The Chalet
From the veranda you have the most stunning views at the Maluti Mountains and the Red Mountains. Nice lounge with wood stove. Fully equiped kitchen and a large en-suite bedroom. The bedroom has 1 queen size bed and a 3/4 bed. In the lounge is a pull out bed.
All units have large closets.
There are possibilities for horse riding, fishing, hunting, mountain biking, hiking, riding 4×4 trails at Mont Plaisir or in its immediate vicinity. In the area are also three golf courses.
The Golden Gate National Park is just a half hour drive away. Mont Plaisir is also the ideal starting point for a holiday. After relaxing a few days at the lodge it can be used as a base for trips to the beautiful Drakensbergen or the Mountain Kingdom of Lesotho or even to the beautiful beaches and the big game parks of Kwazulu-Natal.

The lounge, dinning room and kitchen are open plan with a gas fired log fireplace and DStv in the lounge. The kitchen is fully equipped for six people and includes a combination fridge/freezer, a microwave oven as well as a stove having four plates and an oven. If required, at an additional fee service can be provided. Adjacent to the lounge is a lock up garage and a laundry.
Double wooden cottage pane doors lead from the lounge onto the veranda, which also serves as an entertainment/relaxing area with braai facilities. While having sun downers one can enjoy the view of the mountain where Titanic rock is situated.
The centre of the village is a seven minute stroll away where one will find a number of art galleries, a variety of shops offering a wide range of interior décor and souvenirs The village also offers a number of restaurants for breakfast, lunch or dinner.
Visitors have a variety of activities available and they include, horse ridding, quad biking, hiking, trout fishing, golf, abseiling, mountain trails and nature reserve which also has some bushman paintings. In the winter there is also the possibility that snow may be seen on the high lying areas.
Alternatively one can go on scenic drives to Golden Gate (17km), Fouriesburg (30km) where the asparagus festival is held (approximately in September) and Ficksburg where the cherry festival is held in November. Clarens is also an ideal stop over en route to Lesotho, the Drakensberg and Sani pass.
Last but not least the village with its friendly people offer an ideal country laid back environment for a break away from the hustle and bustle of the metropolitan centres.

Galaxy Farmstay offers a peaceful and tranquil break-away for families, friends and church groups to a very special part of the Eastern Free State at the foothills of the Drakensberg mountain range, namely the Memel district. Memel means “surrounded by water” and is a popular destination because of the colourful splendour of the thousands of birds and especially water birds which is to be found in the Seekoeivlei Wetlands surrounding the small and peaceful hamlet of Memel only 2 hours from Johannesburg. Stay in this lovely old renovated sandstone farmhouse — built in 1917 — with large covered stoeps, three bedrooms (one with fireplace, three bathrooms, dining area with fireplace, sunny lounge, fully equipped kitchen with coal stove (in addition to the gas stove) for the cold winter months. Snow often cover the area in a white blanket in wintertime and the farm is close the Sneeuwberg (Snow Mountain) and well-known Kranskop landmark. Informal hiking trails lead the visitor to a valley with upright cliffs and fountain waterfall against the backdrop of the Kranskop. Small game are often found on this cattle farm of 1 100 hectares and it offers excellent informal hiking, birding, mountain- and eco-quad biking. Flyfishing for Trout and Florida Bass can be arranged in the area and there are excellent mountainbiking-, quad- and 4X4 routes of up to 85 km in the district.

Bird Watching The 2000 ha Seekoeivlei Wetlands — listed as a Wetland of International Importance (RAMSAR) — offers an estimated 350 bird species including many ’specials’ and 15 Red Data listed species. At certain time of the year thousands of water birds congregate on the wetlands, and the grassland areas abound with bird life, making the area a true birding paradise. Scarce and endangered species such as the Wattled, Blue and Crowned Crane may be seen and sometimes roost together in the same part of the wetland. Special birds of the grasslands include Southern Bald Ibis, Blue Korhaan, Rudd’s and Botha’s Larks and Yellow-breasted Pipit.
Hiking Trails Bring your 4×4, quad bike, binoculars or hiking shoes and make your breakaway an unforgettable one! Horseriding and hiking trails available: Uvubu Horse Trails runs through the wetlands and the 2-day Sadiba Hiking Trail is very popular.
Other Activities SEEKOEIVLEI: An eight million Rand development project is underway in the Seekoeivlei Reserve, which on completion will boast some of the best birding facilities in South Africa. Memel offers breathtaking scenic beauty. To the east and the south of the village you drive within minutes into the majestic and picturesque mountains, with their rocky hillsides, sandstone cliffs, high altitude grasslands, through valleys and alongside clear mountain streams and lakes. On the Drakensberg Escarpment at Moorefield, only 25 km from Memel, big areas with unspoilt indigenous forest are to be found. To the north and west the landscape comprises mainly undulating grasslands and includes the extensive 5000 ha Seekoeivlei Nature Reserve.

The village (Memel) is the central hub of the local farming community, and has a rich history going back to the Anglo-Boer war and earlier. Visit the Amajuba Battlefield is close to Memel on the road to Volksrust; Kranskop 4X4 quad route outside Memel, Moorfield Hiking Trail on the road to Newcastle.

The old hotel in Memel is renovated and with a total new look, this is now the place to stay and enjoy Memel and surrounding areas.
From the garden you enter into our bedrooms, (5, of which 3 are en suite) separate from the main building.
Two of the en suite bedrooms also have a second bedroom or private lounge, attached. One with fireplace. All the rooms are decorated with antique and collectable furniture, and each one is different.

Smithfield, the third oldest town in the Free State, offers limitless features of interest for history aficionados, including the Caledon River Museum and the historical cemetery. In the latter you will find the grave of Rose Roberts, an Irish woman, with the gravestone featuring a harp and shamrocks. Explore the urban myth of this Irish woman who died far from home in 1878.

We have a beautiful view on the Red Mountains and the Maluti Mountains. Not all rooms have a view on the Maluti Mountains, but we surrounded by the mountains.
The house offers 5 bedrooms:

Bikers and hikers are very welcome. We do take groups for bed and breakfast. We also offer self-catering to groups of 6 to 10 in the house at a special rate. For these groups we supply coffee, tea, sugar, salt and pepper and 6 cereals.

The Aalen Garden Units comprises of 3 rooms with en-suite bathrooms, each with a Queen bed and bathrooms with separate showers and baths.
