    Purely Primates - Uganda & Rwanda (8 days)

    Description:An eight day safari ex Entebbe/Kigali, visiting the Mountain Gorillas in Rwanda and Uganda, you will have the opportunity to visit all three areas where Mountain Gorillas are found in Africa. Top quality local hotels and lodges are used throughout, and transport is by customised vehicle. All meals on safari are provided, bed & breakfast only in Entebbe. INCLUDED is also a half-day boat trip to Ngamba Island on Lake Victoria where orphaned chimpanzees have been relocated and viewing is excellent.Note that trip may be run in reverse to take into account trekking dates.
    Day 1
    Entebbe, Lake Victoria Hotel Ngamba Chimpanzee sanctuary, half day tour by boat
    Day 2
    Travel from Entebbe along mountain roads to BWINDI IMPENETRABLE FOREST gorilla sanctuary. Overnight in en suite chalet/lodge accommodation. It’s a long days drive but the scenery is beautiful, the last section travelling on mountain roads to reach the camp around 5pm. Overnight Buhoma Guest Lodge. This lodge is located on the edge of the sanctuary, on the slope of the hill. Accommodation is in thatched chalets with ensuite bathrooms. Meals are taken in a dining area. Your permits will be pre-booked for trekking the following day. (Option to upgrade accommodation on request, additional cost)
    Day 3
    Gorilla trekking  Buhoma Guest Lodge An early morning trek into the forest on the slopes of the volcanoes, led by experienced trackers will bring you amongst a family of Mountain Gorillas. These massive primates are extremely rare, only 600 odd remaining. You will get within metres of the family, and be privileged to spend time amongst them. Returning to the camp you will be able to reflect on the experience. Balance of day at leisure, you may organise a forest walk looking for primates and birds in the forest. This would be an additional amount and payable direct to the parks. The trekking may be fairly strenuous; anything from one hour up to six hours or more is not uncommon at relatively high altitude. Please refer to our information sheet.
    Day 4
    Option of second trek or forest walk. The gorilla trekking permit MUST be pre-booked to avoid disappointment.There are two gorilla familes in the area and where possible its good to be able to trek both. After your second trek you will travel to Kisoro on the border of Rwanda. Overnight at the Travellers Rest hotel, made famous by Dian Fossey.
    Day 5
    This morning we will cross into Rwanda (the border formalities are generally done the evening before) An early morning trek into the forest on the slopes of the volcanoes in Rwanda’s Parc National Des Volcans, where Dian Fossey did her ground-breaking research in the 1970s and 80’s. Returning to the lodge, we have an opportunity to relax. Overnight Gorilla Nest Lodge.
    Day 6
    Second opportunity for gorilla trekking. In Rwanda there are 30 permits available (four families) for trekking per day. After the trek, we return to Kabale, overnight at the White Horse Inn, or to Lake Bunyoni, Bushara Island tented camp.
    Day 7
    Return to Entebbe, overnight Lake Victoria Hotel Note: Guests may have the option of flying OUT of Kigali today on a scheduled flight to Entebbe or elsewhere, rather than driving. A further option would be to overnight at NGAMBA ISLAND CHIMPANZEE SANCTUARY, on Lake Victoria. See below for further details, this would be an additional cost.

    Day Excursion
    Travel from Entebbe pier by boat across Lake Victoria to Ngamba Island, about 90 minutes, and view a chimpanzee feeding session close-up from the visitors platform area. Listen to a talk by sanctuary staff, fish in the lake, kayak, view a neighbouring fishing village, enjoy some fantastic bird-watching and other wildlife encounters, with the option to swim on the equator, or just sunbathe and relax! Chimp viewing permit included.

    Description:A 2 day, over nigt chimpanzee experience on Ngamba Island.     Day 1
    Day One Drive westwards taking the Mityana-Mubende road. Continue on to Fort Portal. Dinner and overnight at Rwenzori View Guest House.
    Day 2
    Day Two Early morning walk in Kibale Forest to track the habituated chimps which are the major attraction. These delightful apes are tremendous fun to watch as they squabble and play in trees and are closely related to humans than any other living creature. Using the network of shady forest trails provides much delight to botanists and butterfly lovers, while birders are in for a treat with 335 species recorded. Overnight Rwenzori View Guest House.Primate Walk: This starts from Kanyanchu River Camp at 8:00am or 3:00pm. It lasts for 2-4 hours and is the most popular walk, highlighting the diversity of different animals and plant species within the forest.     Day Three After breakfast, head for Ndali Lodge to get a view of one of the crater lakes in the region, Lake Nyinambuga. Return to Kampala.

    Day Three
    GORILLA TRACKING, this is it, this is the day you have been waiting for. Get up for an early breakfast and off you go on your adventure, after the gorillas. Imagine coming less than 5 metres close to these primates. It won’t be easy but it certainly will be worth it. Overnight at Gorilla Forest Camp.
    Day Four
    After breakfast depart to Queen Elizabeth National Park. Check into your lodge relax for the rest of the day. Dinner and overnight at Mweya Safari Lodge.
    Day Five
    Early morning game drive. Return for breakfast. Lunch at the lodge. Optional bird walk. Afternoon cruise on the Kazinga Channel. Dinner and overnight at Mweya Safari Lodge, FB.
    Day Six
    Optional early morning game drive again. After breakfast depart for Ndali Lodge and Kibale forest. Arrive for lunch. Afternoon at leisure or take a walk around the Crater Lake, swim, fish etc. Dinner and overnight at Ndali Lodge, FB.

    Gorilla Trek Bwindi Uganda (5 days)

    Description:Gorilla Tracking in the Impenetrable Forest, Bwindi for a day. Visit Traditional Drum makers at Mbara. Accommodation in a tented camp. Recently gazetted as a National Park, the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is an area of outstanding natural beauty and is home to over half the world’s population of mountain gorillas. The steeply forested landscape is incredibly dense but crisscrossed by numerous animal trails allowing access to visitors. Two groups of gorillas have been habituated to the presence of people. The birdlife is rich and although forest birds are difficult to view, species such as the colourful Ruwenzori turaco may be seen.
    Day 1 Kampala - Bwindi
    Depart Kampala early in the morning after breakfast at 0830am and drive southwest with a brief stopover at the Mpigi Royal drum makers en route where you will be able to watch the ceremonial drums being crafted using methods passed down through generations, and at the Uganda Equator for photographs. Drive through Savannah grasslands seeing banana plantations and herds of Ankole cattle with their incredibly long curving horns.You then ascend into the Kigezi highlands, with terraced farming and mountain scenery usually known as the “Switzerland of Africa”. Drive through Kabale Town and continue on to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest for dinner and overnight at ½ tented camp.
    Day 2 Mbarara - Bwindi
    Enter the forest at dawn and enjoy the beauty and freshness of the forest, home to the more than half of the world’s left mountain gorillas. After a short briefing by the guides, proceed through the dense bush to trek for these endangered animals. Other primates also live in the forest including the black and white Colobus monkey. Return to Buhoma for dinner and overnight.
    Day 3 Bwindi Impenetrable Fore
    Day in the forest with option of second gorilla permit. This must be pre booked.
    Day 4 Bwindi Impenetrable Fore
    Depart Bwindi for Lake Bunyonyi in Kabale, the lake famous for its little birds and from which the name ‘Bunyonyi’ originates, renowned for its variety and abundance of avian. Enjoy a local canoe ride on this beautiful narrow lake surrounded by green hills. Dinner and overnight at Far Out Camp.
    Day 5 Bwindi - Kampala
    You return to Kampala stopping for lunch en route and arriving in Kampala in the late afternoon.

    This is the major activity in Bwindi, with four gorilla groups currently available daily for tourists. Mubare group (10 gorillas, 1 silverback) was opened for tourism in 1993, Habinyanja group (18 gorillas, 1 silverback) opened in July 1998, Rushegura group (10 gorillas, 1 silverback) was opened in July 2002, while Nkuringo group (19 gorillas, 2 silverbacks) was opened for tourism in April 2004. Book at least 6 months (but not more than two years) in advance to ensure that requested dates are available. Gorilla tracking in Bwindi can be challenging, therefore ensure fitness. Gorilla tracking experience starts at 8.30 am local time and can last from a few hours to a whole day! Registration at the gate commences at 7.45 am.What to bring: • Wear jungle shoes suitable for steep muddy slopes and carry a rain jacket because the park is often wet. • Put on ear plugs for those who feel uncomfortable with jungle sounds. • Carry rain gear, sunscreen lotion, a hat (as the weather is unpredictable) and insect repellant. • Carry a packed lunch.

    Depart early morning for Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. The park derives its name from its thick vegetation with an immense variety of evergreen trees, festooned with lianas, epiphytes, which reach great heights in their search for sunlight plus half of the world’s population of mountain gorillas.     Description:A six-day safari from Entebbe, visiting the Mountain Gorillas in Uganda or Rwanda. Top quality local hotels and lodges are used throughout, and transport is by customised vehicle. All meals on safari are provided, bed & breakfast only in Entebbe. INCLUDED is also a half-day boat trip to Ngamba Island on Lake Victoria where orphaned chimpanzees have been relocated and viewing is excellent. This itinerary may be altered slightly depending on gorilla permits and flight bookings.
    Day 1
    Arrive Entebbe International Airport, you will be met at the airport and transferred to the Lake Victoria Hotel, Entebbe. Bed and Breakfast only included.For those who are really energetic, by prior arrangement it is possible to go to Jinja for the day and do some whitewater rafting or even a bungi jump! Alternatively go to Ngamba Chimpanzee Sanctuary for an overnight in our exclusive tented camp, located on the island just four large tents with ensuite facilities on teak decks overlooking the lake. Whilst on the island, you may be able to go on a chimpanzee walk (by prior arrangement only) in the forest with the young orphaned chimps. Or you may fish, or simply relax and interact with the staff on the island (care-givers) and researchers who look after the orphaned chimps.
    Day 2
    After breakfast, you will drive to the west of Uganda, along mountain roads to either Bwindi Impenetrable Forest or Parc National des Volcans, Rwanda gorilla sanctuary depending on where permits are held. Overnight in en suite chalet/lodge accommodation, all meals included. It will be a fairly long day in the vehicle, passing some interesting scenery, farmland and lush green hillsides. Lunch en route.
    Day 3
    An early morning trek into the forest on the slopes of the volcanoes, led by experienced trackers will bring you amongst a family of Mountain Gorillas. These massive primates are extremely rare, only approximately 600 remaining. You will get within metres of the family, and be privileged to spend time amongst them. Returning to the camp for a late lunch, we have an opportunity for forest walks with the guides, or just to relax. Overnight lodge or camp. The trekking may be fairly strenuous; up to six hours or longer is not uncommon at relatively high altitude. Please refer to our information sheet. Mountain Gorillas are wild animals, as such sightings cannot be guaranteed, however the success rate is well over 90%.
    Day 4
    Further trekking opportunity should permits be available, or the option of a forest walk to look for birds and other primates, or just relax in this beautiful area. Later in the day drive to Kabale a small town in the highlands. Overnight hotel - White Horse Inn or tented camp, located on an island in the middle of Lake Bunyoni. Full Board.
    Day 5
    Return to Entebbe, stopping en route to shop for curios and at the Royal Drum makers at Mpigi if desired. Overnight at Lake Victoria Hotel B & B. An early morning trek into the forest on the slopes of the volcanoes in Rwanda’s Parc National Des Volcans, where Dian Fossey did her ground-breaking research in the 1970s and 80’s. Returning to the lodge, we have an opportunity to relax. Overnight Gorilla Nest Lodge.
    Day 6
    Half-day trip to Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Reserve on Lake Victoria, where orphaned chimpanzees have been relocated under the management of a group of dedicated conservationists including the Jane Goodall Institute. (Depending on flights this may be done on day of arrival) Transfer to the airport for your onward flight, or optional add-ons.

    Within these two days we will go on a boat cruise on the Kasinga Channel, famous for hippos and bird life, and trek chimps in the Chamburu gorge (subject to permits being available and group size). Early morning and late afternoon game viewing / drives will also be conducted in search of Uganda’s unique wildlife such as the Giant Forest Hog, Red Forest Buffalo and Ugandan Kob, and lion, elephant and leopard are often seen.
    Day 7
    Morning game drive out of the park. Drive from QENP to Entebbe, where you’ll overnight at the luxurious Lake Victoria Hotel.
    Day 8
