Marula Lodge
The Reserve, founded in 1992, consists of 30,000 acres of Lowveld Acacia bush and open savanna grass land and all surrounding the lush river. Four twelve bed camps have been build along shady banks of the river.
Makalali’s hand crafted camps have been custom designed to restore a sense of personal connection with nature for every guest. Built in traditional African styles using local artisans and villagers in it’s construction, Makalali represents the merging of an exclusive African safari experience with a strong commitment to protecting the earth and it’s rare wildlife.
Makalali was awarded the title of the Most Innovative Hotel Design of 1997 at the annual Tatler Magazine Travel Awards held at the Ritz Hotel in London.
Each of the four camps are totally private, yet within easy access of each other and situated along the verdant banks of the Makhutswi river. Guests may reserve individual camps as their own, or else may combine all four camps for exclusive seminars or incentive groups.
Makalali has it’s own entertainment area where conferences can be conducted or where incentive groups can meet for their meals.
Each camp has it’s own uniquely designed swimming pool, boma, and enclosed dining and lounge area.
Considered one of the leading pioneers in ecotourism in South Africa, Makalali Private Game Reserve, represents a conservation mission to expand South Africa’s green frontier by re-establishing the ancient traditional wildlife migration routes that linked the famous Kruger Park in the east to lush Drakensberg Mountains in the west.
In the process lion, cheetah, leopard, and breeding herds of elephant, rhino, and the rare sable antelope have all been reintroduced to the wild, making Makalali home to over one thousand wild animals including four of Africa’s “Big Five” wildlife species.
Makalali Private Game Reserve has been selected as one of the Top Ten Restaurants in South Africa in the 1998 Penta-Minis Restaurant Guide.
You’ll experience innovative ideas for bush breakfasts, leisurely lunches in the hand-crafted outdoor “salas” overlooking the flowing Makhutswi River, and the legendary boma and bush dinners, where guests can enjoy a variety of exciting dishes, from Moroccan Lamb with Lemon Coriander to Grilled Kingklip in Chermoula.
Rooms
Makalali has four separate 12 bed camps situated on the banks of the Makhutswi River.
Luxury accommodation is offered where each air-conditioned room has an en-suite bathroom, outside shower, private deck, fire place and a raised timber “sala” which doubles as a lounge or dayroom as a viewing platform.
The rooms are decorated in African design styles with vivid Kentle cloths and sculptured taps and basins.

They will be numbered and each camper will be assigned a camping site number. Each site will have its own braai area and dustpan. The camping area will be lit up with a light at each camp site making it a little more homely and visible. Each site will have its own socket outlets. No fires are to be made in any area that is not specifically demarcated for fires because of the dense forests. There will be a central spot where fire wood can be obtained.

Maduma Boma offers you a unique game farm experience.
The sun rises over your thatched chalet in a secluded part of the bush. An early morning game walk brings you face to face with the Giraffe, Impala, Wildebeest and many other species of magnificent African animals.
Sit quietly at one of the many hides and dams situated on the farm and watch the abundant bird life busy with their daily routine.
Lunch is spent around your own private swimming pool, swimming and soaking up the sun, while a mother warthog and her kids visit you for tea.
At dusk, the Drakensberg Mountains are awash with red - sundowners defined.
In the evening, you enjoy a ‘bushveld braai’. You spend the evening around the fire, relaying the days stories.
After the sun goes down, the night comes alive. The lonely call of the Hyena, the bark of the hungry Jackal and the Owl’s hoot and the piercing call of the Night Jar.

As you meander down from the main lodge, through the undisturbed surroundings of Koro-Koro, you will come across the first of five secluded safari camps. Each camp is nestled in the natural vegetation, and consists
of three lodge rooms, sleeping a total of six people. Each camp has it's own fully equipped kitchen which has cutlery, crockery, gas stove, a fridge, microwave and kettle for your convenience. The face brick exterior and grass thatch roof allows each lodge room to blend in with it's surroundings.
Koro-Koro Safari Lodge, is a world capturing the romance and tradition of a bygone era, the time of classic safari. Koro-Koro, meaning “place of the yellow billed hornbill”, is a private Safari Lodge in the Limpopo province. The lodge is situated in a malaria free area at the foot of the majestic Waterberg mountain range.
Koro-Koro is fully game-fenced, 150 Hectares in size and covered by typical bushveld vegetation with large watering holes and host to a variety of animal and bird species. The lodge is a comfortable 90 minute drive from Johannesburg International Airport, where a warm welcome awaits you at Koro-Koro Safari Lodge.
Koro-Koro's lodge rooms contain two single beds, en-suite bathrooms with showers, a fan in each room and supplied linen guarantees you of a luxurious stay at Koro-Koro.
The undisturbed natural vegetation of Koro-Koro sets the scene for our elegant lodge rooms. Each lodge room is tastefully decorated in keeping with the African theme found throughout Koro-Koro. The interior of each lodge room is done in a stylish fashion, with faux sandstone walls and natural wood furniture. Under cover parking is available at each camp.
Koro-Koro Safari Lodge offers self catering accommodation and we currently accommodate 30 guests at this time. Cook your own meals in our fully equipped kitchens, or you can enjoy a meal in the hooligan bar (our fully licensed pub that serves delicious African pub grub). You can even have our resident chef come and braai (barbeque) for you in the privacy of your bush camp, on prior arrangement with us.
Koro-koro Caravan Park situated in the bush with beautiful surrounding green grass and trees with a family ablution block. A swimming pool and laundry is in the progress of being built.
Under the shade of a magnificent giant Marula tree you will find Koro-Koro Safari Lodge's main lodge area. Here you can relax whilst sipping sun-downers or our unique hooligan juice and watching “Africa” go by, or laze around the pool while Africa's bushveld breeze caresses your skin. We have an indoor bar and luxurious lounge area, as well as an entertainment area with enclosed deck. A waterhole is situated near the main lodge and you can watch the abundant wildlife and birdlife come and quench their thirst while you quench your own. A pool table is available for your entertainment.
We have a wonderful bush braai (barbeque) area where we can serve lunch or dinner in the African tradition (once again, by prior arrangement only). A stage is also available where we have live artists appearing for your enjoyment (please note that live artists are by prior arrangement on special occasions as well as selected times only). No televisions are available in the lodge rooms, as we believe that the African bushveld is entertainment enough. However, the Hooligan bar has a big screen and is available for sporting events and major happenings.
FACILITIES
Koro-Koro Safari lodge boasts a beautiful and modern air conditioned conference facility with a big screen and data projector (with laptop connections), two white-boards with flip charts, fax, e-mail and internet facilities. Please note that we only have accommodation available for up to 30 delegates and the Marula hall is more suited to day conferences.
The Marula hall is also great for wedding receptions, corporate functions, birthday bashes and much more. Contact us for more information.
Then you have to find time to go on the Big Five game drive and see if you can spot them all, Lion, Leopard, Buffalo, Rhino and Elephant. Maybe go on the trails on horseback and feel one with nature. (The big five game drive and horseback trails are not done at Koro-Koro but at a neighbouring big five reserve and at an additional cost. Please enquire about these when making your reservation.)
On top of that, there are over 3 kilometres of quad bike trails and hiking
