Lakenvlei Forest Lodge
Alma Mullin, a forester, and the first woman in the world, to do a lumberjacks course in Europe, build the original mansion in the early 1990s. I bought the property when she decided to go to a retirement village, and after extensive renovations and adding on about another 500 square meters of building, KU DE TA White River started trading.
We have 7 en suite rooms, all with own outside entrances, most with private outside courtyards, some with large farm style verandas ideally suited to the Lowveld climate. All bedrooms are individually decorated with solid, bold, Indonesian Teak furniture along minimalist lines to add to the feeling of peace, serenity and tranquillity. The koi pond, gently cascading all around the house, meandering in and out of the courtyards, reflects a feeling of calm delight.
The spacious lounge with its oversized daybeds is ideal for lazy, relaxing afternoons. Breakfast, or dinner on request, is served in the dining room, where all the windows and doors can be stacked away to open the entire space to the front garden.
The lush subtropical garden with it’s rolling lawn, majestic Royal palms, large dappled shade trees, orchids, epiphytic ferns, colourful shrubs and rare plant collectors plants is a cool escape.

The Highland Rose can be found in the enchanting village of Dullstroom on the Mpumalanga highveld. Here one can while away leisure days amid quaint buildings and cheery characters who populate this idyllic village.
Come breathe fresh air, free your mind and relax in one of our comfortable cottages set in our magnificent garden, lined with tinkling water features and a koi pond. The garden is in itself a bird watchers’ paradise.
Your hosts, Nigel and Gill offer hearty breakfasts in our “farmhouse style” kitchen or on the patio overlooking the garden. We also offer the avid fishermen (and women), a hearty brunch on their return from their early morning quest to catch the big one during the morning rise. Before the excursion, coffee and rusks are on offer.
The main cottage is a real home from home, with a large lounge/diner with open fireplace, kitchenette, bathroom, TV and a romantic loft style bedroom. Two double cottages, both en suite and another room in the main house completes our accommodation arrangements.
All the rooms are fitted with wall heaters, while a full tea/coffee tray is standard fare in the cottages and rooms.
The Highland Rose
Our cottages are beautifully sited offering a private view across the valley on to the White River Golf Course and beyond.
Named after birds that nest on Winmarleigh Farm, they were designed in a similar style to the main farmhouse, which was built in 1920 of unbaked brick. It was one of the first farmhouses built in the area.
Our cottages currently include Barbet, Ibis, Sunbird, Hoopoe and now we have Cuckoo, a comfortable but not as lavishly furnished cottage.
Each cottage at Heuglins offers a large, well appointed bedroom and sitting area with under floor heating and a spacious bathroom with a shower and bath. Telephone, fax and email facilities are available at the main house.
The gardens of Winmarleigh Farm are a peaceful retreat for the weary traveller, and guests are encouraged to make use of the pool to cool down on hot summer afternoons. Lush tropical wilderness intermingles with sunny English roses and winter-blooming azaleas in our gardens - guests are welcome to explore them and the surrounding environment - walking, bird watching, fishing on the dams or just relaxing in the peaceful environment.
White River has a temperate climate, and does not fall within the Malaria belt. Malaria prophylactics should not be a concern unless you plan to visit the Kruger National Park or areas further afield.
Rates include either a breakfast basket delivered to the cottage at your convenience, or a cooked English breakfast which is available in our dining room. Each cottage has a small kitchenette so that limited self-catering is an option, and portable braais (barbeques) are available on request. There are also many restaurants in White River and the surrounding area, ranging from reasonable family type restaurants to upmarket gourmet establishments.
Cuckoo is a little different from our other cottages. It is very comfortable rather than luxurious and has a full kitchen, two bedrooms and lounge. The bathroom is en suite to the main bedroom. The second bedroom does not have its own bathroom. This makes cuckoo cottage ideal for a couple wanting self catering or for a couple with one or two children. The cottage is very private and has its own outside area.
Heuglins on Winmarleigh Farm is only 5 minutes from the town of White River and Nelspruit, Mpumalanga’s capital, is about 20 minutes away.
We look forward to receiving you as our guest at Heuglins on Winmarleigh Farm - to relax, to wind down and to enjoy an area of great beauty and tranquility.
