Outspan Golf and Country Club in Nyeri is a gracious, solid, and a comfortable hotel. Its setting carefully chosen in 1928, with views of Mount Kenya and framed by the white water of the Chania River, the Outspan is the nearest hotel to the spectacular Karua Falls in the Aberdares National Park. The gardens are beautifully manicured and the rooms still retain the qualities of a historical and well-established property. The 30-acre setting lends itself to conferences and training sessions with numerous activities for the leisure hours. Another 16 acres bordering the river are set aside for nature walks. With a round or two of golf, and a visit to Treetops, the Outspan is a very special country hotel.

The Outspan Golf and Country Club Rooms
- The rooms are spacious and airy, most with fireplaces and garden access. The rooms in the new Chania Wing are wood paneled with a fireplace, balcony, satellite TV and mini bar. The remaining rooms are older in style reminiscent of the 1920’s with colonial sized bathrooms.
- 45 rooms include: 34 twin rooms, 8 Chania luxury rooms, 3 cottages.

The Outspan Golf and Country Club Meals and Relaxation
- Dining Room - The wood paneled dining room opens out onto a large verandah where guests can delight in views of the gardens and the spectacular Mt. Kenya beyond.
- Sherry Bar - Adjoining the verandah and dining room, the bar is cozily furnished and provides an ideal retreat for a sundowner on chilly evenings.
- Kirinyaga Tavern - The informal pub-like atmosphere of the tavern allows Outspan guests to meet Nyeri locals.
- Lounge - This attractive lounge with a roaring fireplace is a comfortable place to enjoy a book.
- Snooker Room - This room adjoins the TV room and houses a full-sized snooker table.
- TV Room - Adjacent to the lounge, this room has satellite TV, video, and tables for playing cards.
The Outspan Golf and Country Club Other Facilities and Information
- Golf - A game on the challenging 9-hole golf course next to the hotel can take an entire day. Outspan guests enjoy temporary membership and do not pay green fees.
- Paxtu - Paxtu is the cottage where Lord Baden Powell the founder of the scouting movement chose to spend the last years of his life. It has been preserved as a museum and the memorabilia has been added to it over the years by visiting Scouts and Girl Guides.
- Kikuyu Village - Every afternoon a traditional Kikuyu dancing display is given in a multi-purpose arena. A small Kikuyu homestead has been erected in the enclosure and a narration is given on the dances and traditions of the Kikuyu home.
Outspan Golf and Country Club
The Treetops is the original tree lodge, and is world famous for its location facing a water hole and a salt lick in the Aberdares National Park as well as its historical royal connection. The lodge lies at 6,450 feet above sea level.
In 1932, its first visitors gingerly climbed the wild fig tree supporting the two-room tree house. In February of 1952, a young English girl climbed the tree as a Princess one afternoon, to descend the following morning as Queen Elizabeth II –her father, King George VI had died during the night.
Accommodation
- The lodge rises straight out of the ground on stilts.
- It has 4 decks and a rooftop-viewing platform.
- There are 50 twin bed rooms, which are neat and cozy and are designed like cabins on board a ship.
- Dinner is imaginatively served at tables with bench seating.
- Coffee and liqueurs are served in the comfortable lounge, which features picture windows and trees growing through the building.
- The bar is open every night till midnight.
- Mount Kenya’s breath taking view is visible on clear mornings.
- Treetops have open balconies for viewing and photography; two photographic hides at ground level at either end of the lodge allow really close shots of unsuspecting animals.
- There is an optional buzzer in every room that alerts the guests if something special were to show up at night.
Treetops Hotel
Set in the heart of the Aberdares National Park, The Ark Game Lodge overlooks a floodlit waterhole and salt lick which attracts a host of awesome wildlife such as elephant, rhino, leopard, bushbuck and occasionally an elusive bongo or giant forest hog.
Accommodation
- The Ark is reached via the Aberdare Country Club and is a forty-minute drive.
- It is around 7 miles from Mweiga airfield; a one-hour drive from Nyeri airstrip and a two-hour drive from Nanyuki airstrip.
- The Ark has 60 “cabin-styled” rooms, comprising of 6 singles, 37 twins, 10 doubles and 7 triple-bed cabins.
- All rooms have private bathrooms with shower; all are comfortably furnished and enjoy a view of the forest waterhole.
- Dinner and breakfast are served in the main dining room.
- Located on one of the viewing decks is a lounge and a bar, which remains open all night for tea and coffee.
- The Ark has four game viewing areas from which to observe the ever-present wildlife. There is a ground level hide where you’ll literally come face to face with animals.
- Comfortable en-suite cabins are fitted with buzzers to announce the arrival of one of the “Big Five” at the waterhole.
- Resembling and named after Noah’s Ark, The Ark comprises of three decks from which numerous balconies and lounges provide superb advantage for game viewing.
- A ground level bunker provides excellent photographic opportunities and takes you closer to the animals.
The Ark
Aberdare Country Club is a two-hour drive from Nairobi. The club nestles on the slopes of Mweiga Hill. The club is a popular weekend resort for Nairobi residents. The Club’s 1300-acre wildlife sanctuary abounds with Thompson and Grant’s gazelles, zebras, giraffes and the more reclusive leopards. It is a haven of unhurried charm set in a garden bursting with profusion of color, with peacocks stalking the green lush lawns.
You can walk or ride through this unspoilt paradise, play a round of golf - watched by a family of warthog, fish for trout, play tennis or just relax by the pool or in the beautiful gardens.
Accommodation
- By air, The Aberdare Country Club is 1 mile from Mweiga airfield, 6 miles from Nyeri airstrip and a forty minute drive from Nanyuki airstrip.
- There are 28 twins and 18 double-bed rooms, 36 of which are in cottages. A total of 107 guests can be catered for. The bedrooms are tastefully furnished and all have attached bathrooms.
- The cottages have two bedrooms, each with interconnecting doors, and most have fireplaces.
- A balcony provides superb views of Mount Kenya and Aberdares.
- All rooms and cottages have spectacular views of the plains, the Aberdare Mountains to the west and Mount Kenya to the east.
- Offering first class cuisine with a selection of European, Asian and Kenyan dishes, the dining room is situated in the main building along with the lounge bar.
- A popular venue for conferences, a choice of four rooms is available. The rooms will accommodate groups of 10 to 100 people depending on the layout. Each room is equipped with a full range of audio-visual equipment. The Aberdare Country Club also offers some secretarial facilities.
- Children enjoy swimming; the pool-bar gives parents a convenient place to relax and still watch over the children.
- Other recreational activities available are putting green, horseback riding, tennis courts and 9-hole golf course.
