Galaxy Farmstay offers a peaceful and tranquil break-away for families, friends and church groups to a very special part of the Eastern Free State at the foothills of the Drakensberg mountain range, namely the Memel district. Memel means “surrounded by water” and is a popular destination because of the colourful splendour of the thousands of birds and especially water birds which is to be found in the Seekoeivlei Wetlands surrounding the small and peaceful hamlet of Memel only 2 hours from Johannesburg. Stay in this lovely old renovated sandstone farmhouse — built in 1917 — with large covered stoeps, three bedrooms (one with fireplace, three bathrooms, dining area with fireplace, sunny lounge, fully equipped kitchen with coal stove (in addition to the gas stove) for the cold winter months. Snow often cover the area in a white blanket in wintertime and the farm is close the Sneeuwberg (Snow Mountain) and well-known Kranskop landmark. Informal hiking trails lead the visitor to a valley with upright cliffs and fountain waterfall against the backdrop of the Kranskop. Small game are often found on this cattle farm of 1 100 hectares and it offers excellent informal hiking, birding, mountain- and eco-quad biking. Flyfishing for Trout and Florida Bass can be arranged in the area and there are excellent mountainbiking-, quad- and 4X4 routes of up to 85 km in the district.
