Tanzania Rift Valley Volcano Trek (8 days)

Description:A short intense safari in northern Tanzania for the fit and sportive person who wants to get off the classic safari route and appreciate the beauty of landscape and wildlife joined with cultural interaction of different tribes but specifically the Masai living in the areas where we are walking. Walking the highlands of Ngorongoro Conservation area and Empakai crater, the Salei plains, down the Rift Valley escarpment and up an active volcano makes this safari a complete African experience. The trek up Lengai is quite strenuous but an alternative walk to spectacular waterfalls will be arranged for those not wanting to attempt it. A small daypack with camera, sun cream and water bottle is all you are expected to carry.
Day 1
NAIROBI/ARUSHA/NGORONGORO LODGE. Late afternoon arrival on the craters edge.
Day 2
NGORONGORO CRATER. Half day game driving in the famous Ngorongoro Crater.
Day 3
NGORONGORO/EMPAKAI CRATER CAMPING. Morning climb up to rim of Olmoti crater and descend to waterfalls. Afternoon drive through the highlands where Masai cattle graze next to Zebra and Wildebeest, to Empakai crater where we spend the night.
Day 4
TREK EMPAKAI CRATER/RIFT VALLEY ESCARPMENT. CAMPING. Morning descent into the crater to explore the crater lake on foot and marvel at its wildlife and flora. After we proceed walking to the edge of the Rift Valley overlooking Lengai volcano.
Day 5
TREK RIFT VALLEY/SALEI PLAINS CAMPING. With Masai guides we walk down the Rift Valley escarpment to the Salei plains.
Day 6
TREK RIFT VALLEY/LAKE NATRON. CAMPING. The views over Lake Natron are magnificent. We reach the floor of the Rift Valley on a busy walking path meeting many Masai on the way. Visit to lake’s edge to admire the flamingo colonies feeding in the shallow waters.
Day 7
TREK LENGAI/LONGIDO CAMPING. 1am is time to start our climb. We reach the summit in time to watch the sun rise on Kilimanjaro 200 km away. Inside the crater we witness small eruptive cones spurting lava. It is a powerful magical place sacred to the Masai. In the afternoon back in our vehicles, we cross the Rift Valley towards Mount Longido.
Day 8
NAIROBI. On a little used track we reach the main road to Namanga and after border formalities we head back to Nairobi.
