Information About Jamshedpur - India Travel Guide

Jamshedpur earlier was known as Sakchi, and was part of the state of Bihar. In the year 1904, Jamshedji Tata had the vision of constructing India’s first steel plant. After three painstaking years, with the help of geologists from Pittsburgh, a terrain was found which was rich in iron, coal, limestone and water. This area was very near to the town of Sakchi, and thus the foundation of India’s first steel city was laid.

In 1919, the town’s name was changed from Sakchi’s to Jamshedpur, in honor of Jamshedji Tata. Jamshedji Tata made sure that Jamshedpur had all the ambience and comforts of a developed city during that time. Jamshedpur became a major revenue booster for the state of Bihar. In the year 2000, however, the new state Jharkhand was formed, and Jamshedpur became its capital.

The Tata group has taken Jamshedpur on lease from the government and is responsible for the wear and tear of the city. Tata has planned and maintained Jamshedpur very well and gifted the city with major landmarks to celebrate each 25-year anniversary.
Jamshedpur, also known as Tatanagar, is famous as the oldest planned city in India. It is an industrial base for the Tata Group. Jamshedpur is the only city in India that is leased to a company. Apart from being known as the steel city of India, Jamshedpur is also known as the fountain city for having beautiful fountains around the city.
Jamshedpur is a city filled with places for serenity or adrenalin junkies.

You can start of by visiting the biggest highlight of the city, Jubilee Park. This park was gifted by the Tata group to the residents of Jamshedpur on their completion of 50 Years in the city. It is a beautiful park that spreads over two-hundred acres and filled with illuminated fountains. The ambience of the place is perfect for a romantic setting.

Another park worth a mention is the Sir Dorabji Tata Park. The place is filled with beautiful flowers and dancing fountains.

Tourists virtually reach cloud nine by gliding or flying in the sky by enrolling themselves into one of the many flying clubs of Jamshedpur .

There is also a foundation known as the Tata Steel Adventure Foundation where visitors can do heart pumping activities like para-sailing, rock climbing, kayaking and many more.

Anglers can also have a nice time at the picturesque lake of the city known as the Hudco Lake.

The Tata Zoological Park, is a nice place if traveling with kids, where apart from the majestic animals there are lots of things to be offered.
Jamshedpur also has a number of places to be visited around it. The Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary, is an ideal spot to spend the day. It is spread on an area of almost two-hundred square kilometers and has a massive collection of rare and endangered species. The region’s vivid slopes and landscape makes it excellent spot for trekkers.

Thirteen kilometers from the city is Dimna Lake, which is a perfect picnic spot for visitors. It also has something to for anglers. Another place to visit is Ranchi, which is the state’s capital. Towns and cities of Bengal and Orissa are also highly accessible from Jamshedpur.
Jamshedpur doesn’t have a lot of sky-high malls, but it has its share of decent markets and local bazaars, which sell all the latest international brands.

Markets on the Bistupur main road are full of hustle and bustle, and are an ideal place to get stuff at good bargains. When you are in Jamshedpur, do buy the local woodwork and bamboo work handicrafts – they are the best and cheapest souvenirs you can get from the city.
