Dumai is a city in Riau province on the island of Sumatra, Indonesia. The city has an area of 1727 km² and has 174,465 inhabitants (2001). Dumai is an important transport and trade centre, both regionally and international (among other things to Malaysia).
Dumai is divided in 5 subdistricts (kecamatan):
-Bukit Kapur
-Dumai Barat
-Dumai Timur
-Medang Kampai
-Sungai Sembilan
There are two or three nice and new hotels. Once you reach the jetty, do not allow any touts to bother you. Walk fast and get a tricycle to go to your hotel. Do not tell anybody how long you are going to stay. You can say you came for business meeting with your boss. Your boss is arriving later. You wont be bothered after that. Otherwise the Van touts, tricycle touts will try to push girls to come and stay with you. If you really need a girl, ask the hotel bell boy that you want a young girl to accompany you, or ask for a middle aged masseuse to massage. It will be extra 2 bucks but hassle free. You can negotiate extra services from the massage girl/lady. The going rate is between 24000 to 30000 Rs per night. After reaching the hotel you may also book a van through the hotel lobby. The van will take you to a settlement called Pokok Pisang meaning banana plantation, where you can choose your partner.
The local bus station is about 3 km out of Dumai where busses leave for the nextmost tourist destinations in Sumatra, Bukittinggi (ca. 8-9 hrs) or Lake Maninjau. |
