Aktyubinsk is an administrative centre of Aktyubinsk oblast of Kazakhstan. Aktyubinsk is situated on the Ilek River. Aktyubinsk population is about 265,000 (2002 est,).
History
Aktyubinsk was founded in 1869 as Aktyube (White Hill), a small Russian fort. The first Russian peasant settlers arrived in 1878 in Aktyubinsk. In 1891 Aktyubinsk became the capital of an uyezd (canton) and in 1932 of an Aktyubinsk oblast. During World War II a ferroalloys plant was built to smelt the nickel and chromium ores of the Mugodzhar Hills in Aktyubinsk.
Economy
Aktyubinsk is an important industrial centre now. Aktyubinsk produces chromium compounds, X-ray apparatus, and parts for agricultural machinery and has stockyards and flour mills.
