Karen Blixen Camp - Maasai Mara
Karen Blixen Camp in the Masai Mara National Reserve offers an authentic ’yesteryear’ experience for safari visitors wishing to gain that little extra from their safari experience. You will find that the Karen Blixen Camp experience is a step back in time with the luxury of today. Long gone are the days when staying in a tented camp meant roughing it.
The location is spectacular, with the great Mara plains behind the camp and the impressive escarpment and the river in front. Throughout the day zebras, elephants and hippos come to drink from the river.
The camp comprises 22 spacious tents set on large mahogany platforms – each with a private veranda from which you can enjoy an afternoon siesta drinking in the wonderful surroundings. The tents are furnished with comfortable furniture for the ultimate camping luxury. 19 tents are placed along the riverbank, whilst 3 units are situated on raised platforms offering incredible views of the area. Each of the tents has private bathrooms. Gas geysers heats up water whenever a guest wishes to enjoy a hot shower. We do not use firewood and thus refrain from contributing to deforestation of the area. 6 solar panels provide us with all the necessary electricity with a battery bank making sure there is power and light in the tents all day and night. Camp facilities also include a restaurant, bar, lounge, swimming pool, gift shop with internet access as well as wellness treatments offered by our resident masseuse.
Activities:
Karen Blixen Camp being situated in an area with one of the densest wildlife populations in the world, game viewing is never a disappointment. We suggest that visitors leave the camp in the very early morning, return for a hearty breakfast and spent the warmer hours of the day in the quietness of the camp. Relax with a good book, take a swim in the pool or enjoy the wildlife coming for a drink at the river. In the afternoon, go for another game drive, which may end in the evening or proceed into a night game drive according to your wishes. A picnic lunch can be provided for full day game drives. Animals often seen on game drives in the area include lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, giraffe and zebra, to name but a few. If you wish to come even closer to the wildlife, game walks are arranged directly from camp into our exclusive concession Oloisuk.
Our resident masseuse offers massages and treatments for those in need of extra spoiling. Guests are also able to visit the neighboring Masai village, go on a garden walk, learn the art of Masai beadwork or inspect our environmental equipment (solar panels, gas and sewing system).
